Call for Papers:

Fashion // Intersections: Bodies, Cultures, Spaces

15th July 2016
9:00am – 6:00pm
London College of Fashion, 20 John Prince’s Street, London, W1G 0BJ

The academic study of fashion engages the approaches, theories, and methodologies of various disciplines and fields. Recent publications such as Thinking Through Fashion: A Guide to the Key Theorists (2015, ed. Rocamora and Smelk) and The Handbook of Fashion Studies (2013, ed. Black et al.), along with the increasingly diverse titles of fashion journals attest to the multi-, inter-, and cross-disciplinary nature of the field. Sitting at the nexus of cultural curiosities and theoretical preoccupations, it is these very intersections that render the field of fashion studies endlessly and excitingly nuanced.

Fashion // Intersections: Bodies, Cultures, Spaces is a one day conference organised by six alumni of London College of Fashion’s MA History and Culture of Fashion course (now MA Fashion Cultures). The conference will provide an opportunity for the exchange of new ideas and research that both challenges and exceeds the boundaries traditionally considered in the study of fashion. Papers that explore fashion’s intersections, interstices, overlaps, compatibilities and incompatibilities are warmly welcomed.

Topics may be historic or contemporary in focus and may include issues related but not limited to:

- Gender, sexuality, and identity

- Biography, autobiography, and memory

- Fashion in the museum

- Decoration, adornment, and modification of the body

- Cultural and subcultural participation

- The theories and methodologies of fashion research

- The field of fashion studies

New voices and established scholars alike are invited to participate. There are zero requirements for institutional affiliation or prior degrees. New and in-progress research or papers that address the field of fashion studies itself are specifically encouraged.

Please submit abstracts of no more than 250 words to fashionintersections@gmail.com  by 29th April 2016. Proposals will be blind-reviewed by the organising committee. Applicants invited to present will be asked to prepare a 15-20 minute paper presentation and provide a 150-word biography.
