The theme for the 2017 DATS conference is ‘dress and biography’ and will be jointly hosted by the Royal Pavilion and Museums and University of Brighton.

DATS invites submissions for the two-day conference for papers which explores how dress objects can be used to construct narratives within exhibitions and displays, stage and screen productions, and literature.

Papers focusing on any historical period or geographic areas are welcome. Museum professionals, conservators, students, academics or any member of DATS with an interest in the subject are warmly invited to submit a paper proposal. We welcome both experienced and new speakers, including speakers without an institutional affiliation.

Some of the themes that might be considered include:

  • The biography of people through dress
  • The biography of dress objects
  • Dress exhibitions as biography
  • Private collectors of dress
  • Methods for researching biography and dress


Individual proposals should last 20 minutes (c 2,400 words). Individuals should submit (1) paper title (2) abstract (up to 300 words), (3) biography (c. 100-150 words), (4) postal address, email and contact telephone number and institutional affiliation (if any),  (5) audio visual requirements
